Rember is a voice-to-text app for the Mac. It is designed so that your voice and your words stay on your computer.
What Rember records
Rember records your microphone only while a recording is active: after you press the shortcut or click the menu bar icon, and until you stop or cancel. If you turn on system audio capture, the audio playing on your Mac is mixed into the recording for the same window.
Where your data lives
- Recordings, transcripts and formatted text are stored on your Mac in
~/Documents/Rember. If that folder is synced by iCloud Drive or another service, that sync is governed by that service's policy, not Rember's. - Custom vocabulary, modes and settings are stored in your macOS user preferences.
- Cloud API keys you enter are stored in the macOS Keychain.
You can delete any recording from the History tab, or delete the whole ~/Documents/Rember folder.
Processing on your Mac
By default, speech recognition and text formatting happen on your Mac:
- Apple Speech, and any Parakeet, Nemotron or WhisperKit model you download, run locally.
- Apple Intelligence and any local language model you download run locally.
Downloading a model fetches files from Hugging Face; that request includes the usual information a web download carries (your IP address, the file requested).
Optional cloud formatting
If you add an API key for OpenAI, Anthropic or Google and choose one of their models for formatting, the transcript text (not the audio) is sent to that provider to be formatted. That transfer is governed by the provider's terms and privacy policy. Rember never sends anything to these services unless you have chosen a cloud model.
What Rember does not do
- Rember has no account system and no servers of its own.
- Rember does not collect analytics, usage statistics or crash reports.
- Rember does not sell, share or upload your recordings or transcripts.
Update checks
Rember checks for new versions using Sparkle. An update check sends a request to the update feed that includes your app version and macOS version, nothing about your recordings.
Permissions
- Microphone: required to record you.
- Speech Recognition: required for Apple's on-device speech engine.
- Accessibility: optional; lets Rember paste the result into the app you're using.
- System Audio Recording: optional; only if you turn on mixing system audio into recordings.
